I’ve moved.
Those who have followed me for the past decade or so would have known that I’ve always prided in building my own solutions for almost everything that I use.
That include my ex-journal.
The reversal of opinion first started with my image gallery. I used to have this silly PHP based image gallery which I religiously maintained. When I needed to add auto rotation and resizing functions to it, I did a bit of research, and chanced upon Gallery2. After I’ve discovered that it does what I wanted to, and a whole lot more, I decided to just move onto using Gallery2.
Meanwhile, Rails came along, and I found myself happily converting my old journal system over to Rails framework. Coming from PHP, Rails feels like an absolute dream ♥. It’s flexible, powerful, and I like the language’s(Ruby) idioms. Coding feels like writing poetry!
I took on more time consuming hobbies, more ideas came along that just begs to be put into code, and finally all consuming work. Work for journal languished. It’s not that I’ve run out of ideas on how to improve the code, but there’s always more pressing matters and ideas that demand my attention.
Meanwhile, as a habit, I always keep track of all the more notable open source projects, and one of them happens to be Wordpress. I do help people setup their journals on Wordpress from time to time, and everytime that happens, I’ve always found something new to like about Wordpress.
Finally, I decided to bite the bullet and make the switch. Yes, I’ll lose all the customisations that could be had with my own engine, but it is not as if I have all the time in the world to make use of it. I’m willing to give up just a tiny bit of my freedom in order to get a well maintained platform, zillions of zazzy templates, and alot more free time.
Hope this switch would be my last. =X
